{438} More than a thousand fans welcome SHINee to Singapore
Fans show up in full force at the airport to greet popular Korean R&B boyband who’s here for Oh Joonsung’s concert

It was as if Lee Min Ho had returned to Singapore once again. Only this time it wasn’t the Korean heartthrob from the hit drama Boys Over Flowers. Instead on last Friday night, the more-than-a-thousand strong crowd at the airport was eagerly awaiting SHINee, the hugely popular Korean boyband who would be visiting Singapore for the first time.

Incidentally, the five-member group owes its fame to their song, ‘Stand By Me’ which was featured in the soundtrack of Boys Over Flowers.

The eager beavers had camped at the airport since morning even though the idols only appeared around 10pm and that’s when things got a little crazy with fans pushing and shoving, which nearly toppled the barricades. To prevent further chaos, the boyband made a beeline for the coach awaiting them.

Group leader Onew, who was nursing an injury and lagged behind the rest of the boys, smiled warmly to the fans. The five of them then waved from the coach to their fans’ utter delight.

The group will be performing with renowned songwriter Oh Joonsung and other Korean artistes Bobby Kim and Mario for the Oh Joonsung Drama Concert – Music from Korean Drama Favourites, which celebrates classic Korean drama songs written by Oh. It will be held at the Esplanade today and tomorrow.

At the event’s press conference the next day, the craze over SHINee continued, prompting hip hop artiste Bobby Kim to remark that the group had so many fans at the airport that they could rival the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

SHINee member Key said, “We’re very surprised to see so many fans. Moreover, the crowd did not cause us any discomfort, and we’re grateful for that.”

Oh, who wrote ‘Stand By Me’ praised the group, who agreed immediately when he invited them for a collaboration, for their humility and talent, calling them one of today’s top Korean groups.

With the very rousing reception they have received from locals, the lads said they couldn’t wait to perform on stage.
